Join the MSA Family!

Be part of the coolest club on the planet!

The MSA is for anyone wanting to take their college experience to the max. Make friends, serve the community, learn a lot, and have fun while doing it! That's our mission at the MSA at UK.

How do I become a member?

Anyone can join regardless of gender, race, religion, and culture! Start coming to meetings and you are already a member!

I have to be religious to join the MSA, right?

The biggest misconception people have about joining the MSA, is that you need to be very religous. The MSA consists of people that are at varying levels in faith. The MSA is a no judgement zone, InshaAllah we all want to increase in Iman but there will be no scrutiny for your degree of religosity. If you don't feel that the MSA is providing a welcoming and judgement free environment please don't hesitate to notify one of the officers about your concerns.

What is "good standing" and what is it for?

There are two levels of good standing in the MSA, one is for eligibility to vote in elections at the end of the year and the other is to run for a position for the next school year. The MSA tries to keep up with the attendance of all its meetings. If you would like to know how many events you have been, how much you've volunteered, or where you stand please email Hamza Ashfaq at vicepresident@ukymsa.com. For more information about attendence requirements visit the Point System page

Good standing for Voting consists of having met the following criteria

  • 5 hours of community service with the MSA per semester
  • 1 halaqa per semester
  • 1 Social Meeting per semester
  • $20 dues paid during fall semester (Additional $5 if paid after Fall midterm)
  • Exceptions for criteria will be made for special cases. Please talk to one of the officers if you feel that you might may not be able to complete one or more of the above criteria for one reason or another.

Good standing for candidacy consists of having met the following criteria

  • 10 hours of community service with the MSA per semester
  • 3 halaqa per semester
  • 3 Social Meeting per semester
  • $20 dues paid during fall semester (Additional $5 if paid after Fall midterm)
  • Exceptions for criteria will be made for special cases . Please talk to one of the officers if you feel that you might may not be able to complete one or more of the above criteria for one reason or another.

    Where do my dues go?

Firstly, dues goes towards your member t-shirt. Secondarily, dues goes towards operating costs of the club. This can include paying for pizza for monthly meetings, doughnuts for Duhr & doughnuts, paid breakfast for one member at Fajr & folgers, booking rooms for events, paying honorariums for speakers, buying supplies for events such as making care packages for the Kentucky Children's Hospital and Thanksgiving Baskets for the Share Center, and much more.

Why do dues increase after Fall midterm?

We allow everyone to pay the $20 dues at any time before fall midterm. The reason it goes up during after midterm is that we want to encourage members to pay dues early. We rely on dues to fund the operations of the MSA as listed in the previous answer. Special exceptions will be made for students that are Spring semester transfer students or students that were not active before fall midterm.
